German workers can use Bildungsurlaub, the country's legally mandated paid learning leave, to take three days off and play GTA 6 from November 18 to 20. The state-funded course is capped at 60 participants, according to IGN.
The course: Open World Games
The program is called "Open World Games: Lessons from a Digital World." It is run by course provider Dein Bildungsurlaub and is designed to "explore storytelling, digital culture, and collaboration through open-world gaming," according to a press release shared with IGN.
Students work in guided groups, complete assignments in the game, and use what they observe to learn lessons on storytelling, motivation, community-building and collaboration. One lesson looks at how Easter eggs drive player engagement.
Who can join
- Participants must be 18 or older.
- They need a suitable device and a licensed open-world game.
- The course runs online over three days, with an additional in-person event planned in Berlin.
IGN reports that 23-year-old accountant Victoria from Berlin has signed up. She says she wants to see how the experience can help her handle stressful clients at work.
Why it matters for players
Time-off requests are climbing. IGN cites estimates showing a 17% increase in requests for the November 19 launch date. Germany is not the only country preparing workers. IGN notes that Australia's workplace regulator published a graphic on paid leave rights ahead of the launch. In July, a flyer from the 9th Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, went viral for offering recruits a four-day pass to play GTA 6 as a "special reenlistment incentive."
For most players, the simple takeaway is that a launch-week day off is more realistic than it looks. If you are in Germany and eligible, the 60-seat cap means the course is worth checking early.
